The 25th Mansfield Fellow from the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation

From November 15 to December 17, Lieutenant Commander Veronica Kennedy from the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation studied at the NIDS as the 25th Mansfield Fellow.

The Mansfield Fellowship Program provides opportunities for U.S. federal government employees with training in the Japanese government agencies, aiming to contribute to strengthening relationships between Japan and the U.S.

During the training at NIDS, Lieutenant Commander Veronica Kennedy learned the features and functions of the NIDS, a think tank of the Ministry of Defense as well as the only national academic research institute concerned with security in Japan. She also exchanged views with NIDS scholars on the security environment surrounding the Japan-U.S. Alliance. With her contributions to the program, the Japan-U.S. relations for the next generation have become more strengthened and solid.

Exchange with the Malaysian Institute of Strategic and International Studies

On November 11, Shaliman Lockman, Director of the Office of the Director General of the Malaysian Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), and researchers from the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) exchanged views online on the situation surrounding Malaysia in the South China Sea.

NATO Conference of Commandants

President Saito and Director Yoshizaki from National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) visited Copenhagen, the Kingdom of Denmark to participate in the 50th Conference of Commandants (CoC 2021) held from October 12 to 14. The conference is an annual meeting held on a rotating basis by the National Defense Universities of NATO member countries, and it brings together the commandants of the National Defense Universities of NATO member countries and partner countries. The main theme of the meeting this year was "Professional Military Education (PME) and the Future Warfighter," focusing on the future of warfare, future warfighters' skills, and the implications on PME. Physical attendees, who were allowed to participate face-to-face on the condition that they were fully vaccinated, exchanged opinions and information at the forum.

Online Participation in the ARF HDUCIM

From October 4 to 6, President Saito and 4 others from National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS) participated in the 24th ASEAN Regional Forum Heads of Defence Universities/Colleges/Institutions Meeting (ARF HDUCIM) organized by the National Defense University of Pakistan. At the conference, held online under the COVID-19 pandemic, participants from National Defense Universities and others presented their reports on the general theme of "Seeking Peace: Beyond the Traditional Perspective." President Saito and Director Yoshizaki introduced activities and education conducted at NIDS.

Strengthening Friendship with Alumni

Four Decades have passed since the NIDS Regular Course accepting international students in 1981. NIDS create the Alumni badge for symbolizing our alumni connections.
On Wednesday, 28 April, Mr. TANAKA Satoshi, President of NIDS gave the badge to five Alumni who work in Embassy at Tokyo.

Exchange of ideas with US Army War College

On December 22, the 68th regular course students joined an inaugural dialogue between the faculties in NIDS and the the US Army War College.
We exchanged some ideas about IndoPacific security. We deepened mutual understanding through presentations from the energetic discussions.
