Areas of Expertise
Dr. Kotani has been a fellow of Military History Department, NIDS since 2004 and researched on intelligence history. He obtained his MA in War Studies from King’s College London and is Ph.D. in International History from Kyoto University. He was a visiting fellow of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), UK in 2008-9.
He is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). His book, Intelligence of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, was awarded the Yamamoto Shichihei Prize in 2007.
His research interests are; Anglo-Japanese Relations in 1930-40s, intelligence history in World War II and recent Japanese intelligence reform.
